ALONE - WITH A DEAD MAN IN AN AFRICAN FOREST
The date of this story is 1914-in the First World War. The place is a part of Africa then held by the Germans. Rose Sayer and her brother, Samuel Sayer, worked in a mission: they were missionaries: they had a church and a school and taught Christianity to the Africans in the village.
Rose Sayer could see that her brother Samuel was very ill: he had become worse. He knelt down to say the evening prayer but his hands shook, and his voice was very weak. He prayed God to forgive them and guide them in their lives. Then he began to say his usual prayer for God's blessing upon the mission; but his voice failed. They had given their lives to the mission, but now it had ceased to be. General von Hanneken and his soldiers had carried away all the people from the village to be soldiers or bearers in the Army of German Central Africa. All the animals and food had been taken - everything except the little house in which Samuel and Rose lived.
