The Government lent us the big Elphinstone School Buildings, with its huge compound, and the public lectures were held therein in the open air. It was prettily decorated with flags and streamers, and there was generally an interested crowd at the gates. A]] the arrangements were well made, both for the meetings and for the boarding of the delegates, and there was not a ripple of complaint from any direction.** *The public lectures proved to be very attractive. They were opened by myself, and Krishnnji spoke on the following day. It is evident that part of his work in India will he a vigorous campaign against the abuses which have been allowed to pollute the great National Religion, and it was evident that he felt bitterly the contrast between the lofty ideals of Hinduism and the corruption which has entered the priesthood and the holy places. He gave a scathing description of a funeral he had lately attended, at which the priests bargained for so many rupees before they would chant the customary mantras. The
