Preface This first edition of Pharmaceutical practice replaces the 12th ediuon of Cooper and Gunn's Dispensing for pharmaceutical students published in 1975 by Pitman Medical. There has been a change in the editorship, a change in the title and a completely redesigned and updated content. The text has been written by a number of authors, each of whom has experience and expertise in a particular field of pharmacy education and practice. The changes in the subject matter of the book reflect the changes that have taken place in the role of the practising pharmacist and that have been described in the report of the Nuffield Inquiry into pharmacy. ('Pharmacy' The Report of a Committee of Inquiry appointed by the Nuffield Foundation 1986.) Whilst becoming increasingly patient orientated the pharmacist continues to maintain the traditional product-orientated expertise in the formulation, compounding, packaging, storing and dispensing of medicines. The overall philosophy of the book is unchanged; that is to provide a sound base for all aspects of good pharmaceutical practice. The reader of this book is referred to the companion volume Pharmaceutics: the science of dosage form design, (Aulton 1988, Churchill Livingstone) for an account of the scientific principles which underly the formulation of drug delivery systems, for the principles of pharmaceutical microbiology and for the techniques used in large-scale manufacture of pharmaceutical products.
