INTRODUCTION.There are moments in life when everything seems to go "wrong, when we feel at war with the world. How thankful are we then for a cheery word or a witty joke that will help to drive dull care away! It matters little whether the joke be at the expense of a good friend or even of ourselves, if it has a salutary effect on our drooping spirits. If we sometimes have occasion to laugh at others, we must not be offended if the joke should happen to turn against us.It was Thomas de Quincey who asserted that aU anecdotes are lies. If that be the case, this volume cannot be estimated very highly. Nevertheless, it contains a goodly number of stories that I have either experienced myself or have heard narrated as facts. I hope that you, dear Reader, while you peruse this book, will not have occasion to follow the example of the man who used to raise his hat when he was told a story. On being asked why he did so he replied calmly, "Oh, I always like to greet an old friend."In this collection there are stories and anecdotes relating to all sorts and conditions of men aud women in various parts of the world.13.
