The opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the editor or the USCF.Here is the best letter. Lisa McFeely will receive a copy of More Fun with Chess Miniatures by Robert Lincoln, the first book published by USCF Press. Congratulations, Lisa!potentialMy daughter just joined Pinewood Christian Academy's chess team. She is 9 years old and although she has loved playing chess here at home, she has never been involved with a team and/or tournaments.Of course, losing is something they have to learn in the beginning because it is the losing that allows them to learn so much. My daughter walked out of her in-school tournament with a huge smile on her face and you'd have thought she won big!Instead when I asked her if she won, she replied no. I then asked her why she was smiling so big. Her response was that although she lost her coach, Mr. Sutton, told her that she had the potential to become a great player. That response, 1 believe, had a much larger impact on her than if she'd won the match. It was a very uplifting experience for her. Thanks to all the coaches that handle themselves this way because it encourages the children to continue playing and gives them faith in themselves for the future.Lisa McFeely Proud of being a PCA parentlegal ethicsI am disappointed by GM Evans' October reply to my ethics question. He said, "If it's legal, it's ethical."But if that were true we wouldn't need two words. Legal is what we have to do, ethical is what we should do.If a store clerk gives me too much change it is legal to pocket it. I always return the extra, which is the ethical thing to do.If the opponent forgets to punch the clock it is unethical, though legal, to purposefully not point this out. And I teach my students that in no uncertain terms.Twenty years ago George Will wrote, "A society is disoriented when proper moral judgement is supplanted by a morally constricted legalism, the notionthat whatever is legal whatever there is a right to do is morally unobjectionable. But in sports, as in life generally, comportment should be controlled by a morality of aspiration more demanding than a mere morality of duty A morality of aspiration should elevate people above merely complying with elementary rules."In time trouble (poor excuse!) I made a legal decision 1 am disappointed in. I apologize to my opponent.Stephan Gerzadowicz Wallkill, Mew Yorksamford residencyIn a letter to the editor (October, Sam-ford purpose) Peter Connor questions the selection of Varuzhan Akobian as the 2002 Samford fellow, based on the fellowship's stated purpose of assisting American chessmasters and Mr. Akobian's relatively short residency in this country. When I worked with the late Frank P. Samford Jr. creating the Fellowship 17 years ago, we addressed the issue of eligibility for foreign-born players. We considered all possibilities, ranging from requiring U.S. citizenship at one extreme, to accepting applicants immediately upon their arrival here once they declared their intention to become American, at the other extreme.Eventually we decided on a one-year residency requirement. Eligibility requirements for the Samford Fellowship are different from those of the USCF, since we are looking towards longer-term objectives. The Samford Committee (Frank P. Samford III, Grandmaster Arthur Bis-guier and International Master John Donaldson) is an extremely knowledgeable and diligent group and I have complete confidence in their decisions.Allen J.Kaufman Forest Hills, New Yorknath inspirationKudos to Alex Dunne for his article on Narender Nath, in November Chess Life 2002 Check is in the Mail.I think this article not only encourages more chessplayers, but more enthusiastic and good sportsmanlike players.Bob Andersen Athens, Tennesseeoverseas critiqueIt is a pleasure to be the regular recipient in London (UK) of Chess Life as an official exchange with EG Quarterly International for the composed endgame study (and for computers-and-the-endgame). May I contribute a transatlantic penny's worth to the discussion of the quality and content of the magazine, taking the October 2002number as 'my text'?GM Soltis writes colorfully about the composer A.P. Kazantsev, but makes a few slips: APK was only coauthor (with Kofman and Liburkin) of the 1955 classic The Soviet Chess Study; and APK himself died last month, o the 13th of September, so is longer with us.For Soltis to refer to studies as 'problems'jars on study ears, I'm afraid, and it was no joke when APK said his masterpiece was harder to create than a novel. Equally colorful, especially with the illustrations, was Glenn Petersen's coverage of the Chess Collectors International get-together, but again there are'buts': to report a May event in October is being slow off the mark for a monthly; and you should have known better than to spell Lothar Schmid's name as Schmidt. So, a little more care seems called for. And one misses from the magazine the occasional in-depth scholarly review of a significant new tide with research value.Looking forward to the November issue!John Roycroft London, EnglandChristiansen fan
