When it came time to make story assignments for this issue of Endless Vacation magazine which celebrates RCI's 45th anniversaryI decided I would go to Philadelphia (page 65), a city that knows a thing or two about milestones. A long time ago, it was the capital of the U.S. and is home to many treasures, among them the Liberty Bell. Another treasure of particular interest to me is the Barnes Foundation, a museum so bursting with Impressionist art that the college student in me who dabbled in drawing classes had to see it all firsthand. Walking the halls, I marveled at famous Van Goghs, and I stood transfixed in front of a tiny village scene I'd never come across before by French Postimpressionist painter Henri Rousseau, in a setting that felt cozy and not at all intimidating for a major institution. These days, the draw of the city's history (art and otherwise) is being j oined by its growing reputation for great food, and I spent another afternoon wandering through a neighborhood where independent cafés and shops are popping up, and I sat down for meals at some headline-grabbing restaurants. Driving home on Sunday, stuiFed and happy, I decided what I'd come to love about Philly is its balanced focus on its distinguished past and its bright future.If, like me, you enjoy hitting the road in the fall, we've mapped out family-friendly itineraries for apple picking in Vermont (page 30).
