Bővebb ismertető
ForewordThis work draws heavily on thick dossiers which the late Norbert Dufourcq kindly let me photocopy in full in 1985 and 1986. I have also greatly benefited from conversations with his niece, Mile Marie-Madeleine GaUet, who was equally generous in putting at my disposal very valuable manuscript material, including photographs. Without her collaboration, which helped me enormously in writing The Physicist as Artist: The Landscapes of Pierre Duhem (Edinburgh: Scottish Academic Press, 1988), this book could not have been written. The letters of Pierre Duhem to his daughter, Hélene, mostly used in Ch. 2, were deposited by Mile Gallet in 1982 in the Archives of the Académie des Sciences in Paris, where they have been available for study since January 1991, the beginning of the hundreth year since Hélene's birth. I am now preparing a selection of those letters for publication under the title. Lettres de Pierre Duhem a sa fille, Hélene. Only the most essential documentation is given here. For further references the reader may conveniently turn to my book. Uneasy Genius: The Life and Work of Pierre Duhem (1984; 2d ed.: Dordrecht: Martinus Nijhoff, 1987), which may be used as a companion volume to this work.
